The Facts: Cannabis Oil vs. CBD Hemp Oil

Given the widespread proliferation of many companies advertising so-called pure CBD Hemp Oil on the internet these days, we thought we’d help answer some of the questions we’re constantly asked about the differences in these products and their therapeutic potential.  It can be really confusing, as both marijuana and industrial hemp are evolutionary derivations of cannabis.  The science gets technically deep very quickly, but in a few sentences we’ll do our best to distill and encapsulate the differences of each to help patients and consumers make intelligent choices.

The bottom line is that extracted cannabis oils, such as those found for sale in many state-licensed medically-endorsed recreational dispensaries, contain a plethora of diverse chemicals not found in products isolated from industrial hemp.  Leading scientific researchers postulate that the core principle of cannabis-based therapy revolves around the concept of interactive synergy.  Put another way, the total physiological effect of the phytocannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBG, CBC, THCV, CBDV, CBN, etc.) and other compounds present in cannabis (terpenoids, flavinoids, etc.) is greater than the sum of its parts.  It is this complexity of cannabis-based therapies which confounds policy-makers, medical researchers, patients, and recreational consumers alike.

As a general practice, we recommend against macro-dosing your body and mind with mass-produced isolated chemical compounds derived from industrial hemp in order to achieve the same level of desired therapeutic benefits smaller amounts of combined phytocannabinoids and terpenoids may provide.  We also caution consumers not to eschew the use of THC in the management of their chronic conditions out of fear of intoxication or impairment, as doing so limits the potentiality of entourage effects and optimal outcomes.  It is entirely possible to benefit from the profound effects of THC without experiencing psychoactivity and it's important to remember that the pharmacology of THC is perhaps the most well-studied of any scheduled substance having well over 100 published clinical studies available for review.
